[ When the recording begins, there's no clear background noise. There's a soft sound of breath at times, but the device isn't close enough to pick up a rhythm. It takes a few seconds for a voice to speak. ]
Green... I know you don't know me... and to you, I'm just some kid. Us being the only two pokémon trainers here doesn't mean we have to get along. Back home, him and me...
[ Inhale, exhale. The pause isn't long. ]
The Green I know, we don't get along either. He'd always call me slow and stupid, even before we stopped hanging out. I think things changed a little after our last match, but I don't know. I think maybe -- maybe he sees me as an actual rival now. That I'm not as worthless as he used to say.
[ The words come so easily despite the emotion in each one, and the fact that it wasn't even a subject he planned to bring up. But there wasn't any plan in his phonecall - only a want. A longing. A need for something normal, and in a place it doesn't entirely exist.
He deliberately waits a few seconds this time before continuing. ]
But I didn't call you to talk about him. You're not him -- you're you, and I don't know you. I don't know anything about you or what you've been through here. But I still... [ ... ] I want to... because you're the closest person to home.
[ His voice lowers, already soft from the breaks between his words. ]
I don't want to do this without you, Green.
[ There's nothing but a silence, until the sound of rustling and movement, and then-
it ends. ]
https://youtu.be/T7CJO0QTbQk - also sometime on day 115
[ When Green finally gets a chance to catch a breath after a long, long day of how to actually point a gun at things and shoot, the first thing he does is check his blackglass. There aren't as many messages as before, but -- one catches his eye, but he doesn't touch it until he's sitting comfortably on his bunk.
By the time it reaches the end he has no idea what to do.
Green considers ignoring the message entirely, pretending it never happened; he already saw it a couple of days late, no harm in pretending it just ... never existed, right? The kid's already a bit of an idiot anyway. If he doesn't bring it up, chances are Red wouldn't talk about it either but --
They really are the only two Pokemon trainers here, aren't they?
Once upon a time, Green would have probably scoffed at the notion of sticking together for the sake of having someone "close to home". He's always traveled by himself for a reason - other people drag him down. Anything the world threw at him he could take without a question, as proven by his journey at the age of 11. Even if a certain idiot came by to ruin it at the end.
It's different here though, and he's been realizing this from the moment he landed himself on the Neheda. Without a full team of 6 and stuck in a place that don't operate with the same rules that he's used to - never mind how powerful some of these people are - he's pretty low on the power rung.
Also, a part of him realizes how lonely it gets here - without another trainer, someone familiar. As much as he'd never admit it.
So after a long, long time of staring at his black glass, he finally sighs, pulling up the keyboard. ]
That's a difficult question, and the fact is that he doesn't remember what he even asked. Red doesn't think about that first, going through the penny dropping realisation first and the anxiety and panic that comes after. Accurately imagining the faces and dumb going on in his end is not a difficult task for anyone that has met him.
He returns to the black glass.
you can forget about it if you want.|
He could leave it at that, but - would he be missing out on an opportunity? Except what would he even ask? Make introductions? Would that be stupid...
Red erases the message and starts again. Apologies to Green's patience. ]
[ The question's sent on impulse, out of sheer curiosity; there's no way this is the same "Red" he's thinking of, they've proven that much. But ... just how much do these experiences overlap? ]
its a magazine. it came when all the stuff was dropping out of portals. daisy won a spring competition and theres a picture. theres other stuff in it too
Now it's Red's turn to slow down on his responses, eyes shifting from the black glass so the words don't stare back at him. The earlier energy comes close to diminishing, at least calming with the news that a Red exists for this Green. When he was so much like the Green he knew, imagining the difference between them to be himself (a version of him) not existing seemed plausible.
If 11 year old Green had been asked this question, he probably would have scoffed and rolled his eyes, because Red? His rival? Red's a dweeb who doesn't know any better, his rival needs to be more worthy than that.
